The City of Union City was the result of the merge of West Hoboken and Union Hill. This emblematic building at the corner of 43rd Street & Bergenline Avenue is just located at the top of the hill and it is visible from everywhere in the area. It is regarded as one of the tallest buildings in the city. The New York skyline and the vast Meadowlands can be seen from the top floors. In an effort to enhance the area, the owners have restored it to its original beautiful facade. Now, it stands tall with an air of grandeur and the classic architecture that defies time.
The area of what is today Union City was originally inhabited by the Munsee-speaking branch of Lenape Native Americans who wandered into the vast woodland encountered by Henry Hudson. What a better name for these residences building than the name of the original residents of the area?
The Munsee are a subtribe of the Lenape, originally constituting one of the three great divisions of that tribe and dwelling along the upper portion of the Delaware River, the Minisink, and the adjacent country in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. From their principal totem they were frequently called the Wolf tribe of the Lenape. They were considered the most warlike portion of the tribe and assumed the leadership in war councils. They were prominent in the early history of New York and New Jersey, being among the first tribes of that region to meet the European immigrants.
